Tanequil Character List

The list for order of appearance has only the characters that had an physical part in the story, not the people that were mentioned only in passing (such as Mirianna Ohmsford - Par and Coll's mother); these will be indicated by italics in the alphabetically-ordered list.

Acrolace
Sent with Parn to spy on the Federation, she now returns, wounded badly. However, she is lucid enough to tell Pied about the Federation's new weapon, which she saw.
Antrax
A being from the world Bek, Rue, and others went to twenty years ago, it was destroyed by Walker.
Atalan
Kermadec's brother, he is one of twelve Trolls who accompany Pen into the Inkrim.
Bandit
A moor cat that Pen encountered while trapped in the Slags, it follows them to Taupo Rough. When Aphasia Wye attacked, Bandit attacked the other, losing his life in the process.
Barek
One of twelve Trolls who accompany Pen into the Inkrim.
Brona
Also known as the Warlock Lord, he is now a shade. Grianne summoned him in the Forbidding.
Cinnaminson
A blind Rover girl, she is the daughter of Gar Hatch and can "see" with her mind. After Pen saves her from Aphasia Wye, she goes with him into the Northland and from there onto the island where the tanequil dwells. She meets the aeriads that live there and becomes one of them.
Cresck
A crewman of the Asashiel.
Dagda Mor
A Demon that escaped the Forbidding five hundred years ago that tried to have Amberle killed but failed.
Droshen
A Southlander, he is the nominal leader of the Freeborn army.
Drumundoon
Pied's aide.
Ellcrys
A tree created by Elven magic from before the Great Wars, she was made to maintain the Forbidding to prevent the Demons from invading the Four Lands.
Galaphile
The first High Druid and creator of the first Druid Council.
Hobstull
Known to Grianne first as Topknot, it is Tael's Catcher, his finder and keeper of specimens. It was Hobstull who captured Grianne.
Kellen Elessedil
The King of the Elves, he foolishly flies into battle against the Federation without a second thought, knowing nothing about the Federation's new weapon, which is used against his ship. He dies in the resulting explosion.
Kermadec
A Troll Maturen, he was found by Pen and the others in Taupo Rough and goes with them further into the Northland to seek out the tanequil. While Pen and Cinnaminson are on the island where the tanequil dwells, Kermadec and the others are caught and held captive by Traunt Rowan and Pyson Wence.
King of the Silver River
A being living since the time of Faerie, he appeared to Penderrin and told him of the quest he must make.
Kiris Elessedil
Fifteen years old and one of Kellen's sons, he is on the Ellenroh along with Wencling and Kellen and is killed when the Federation uses its new weapon against it.
Markenstall
Commander of a railgun sloop, the Asashiel, he flies Pied into battle and uses the sloop to dismantle the Dechtera, which carries the Federation's new weapon.
Moric
A changeling from the Forbidding, it was released into the Four Lands when Grianne was transported to its world. It takes control of Iridia Eleri and now serves Sen Dunsidan in the hopes that it can get him to destroy the Ellcrys.
Parn
Sent with Acrolace to spy on the Federation, he was killed when the Federation found him out, though Acrolace survived and was able to escape.
Phaile
One of the Home Guard, he summons Pied to Acrolace.
Pon
A crewman of the Asashiel.
Split
An arrow swift with a wedge in its tail feathers, it is assigned to Traunt by Shadea and carries messages between the two.
Tagwen
Grianne's trusted advisor and secretary. A Dwarf, he goes with Pen into the Northland to save the Ard Rhys.
Father Tanequil
The part of the tanequil that is aboveground. It communicates with Pen and takes two of his fingers and gives him a branch from it in return, then helps him shape it into the darkwand.
Mother Tanequil
The part of the tanequil that is belowground. It takes Cinnaminson and feeds on her body while Cinnaminson herself roams the air as an aeriad. It kills Aphasia Wye by wrapping its roots around him and crushing him.
Word
The creator of life in the Four Lands.
Redden Alt Mer
Pen's uncle.
Shadea a'Ru
The High Druid of Paranor, she continues the hunt for Pen and holds his parents captive. She takes in Gerand as her supposed equal, then gains the support of all the people in his inner circle. After she is done with him, she paralyzes, then kills him.
Walker Boh
The last Druid before Grianne.
Gerand Cera
A Druid who hates Shadea as much as Grianne, he nonetheless allows himself to be seduced by the former and for a while supposedly holds as much power as she does. However, once Shadea had no more use for him, she drugged him, paralyzing all of his muscles, and suffocates him with a pillow.
Weka Dart
An Ulk Bog, he comes to Grianne after she fights the Furies and reveals that he was Tael's former Catcher. He tells Grianne that Tael plans to mate with her.
Sen Dunsidan
The Prime Minister of the Federation, he brings the Freeborn-Federation war to a head as he unleashes his powerful new weapon.
Iridia Eleri
Once one of Shadea's accomplices and a Druid, she is possessed by the Moric and now serves Sen Dunsidan. She persuades the Prime Minister to attack Arborlon, supposedly to kill all of the Elven women and children, but really to destroy the Ellcrys.
Ahren Elessedil
Khyber's uncle and a Druid, he died after sustaining several injuries while battling Terek Molt and the Gnomes on board the Galaphile.
Arling Elessedil
Kellen's wife, she was once in love with Pied.
Khyber Elessedil
The daughter of Kylen and brother of Kellen Elessedil, she goes with Pen into the Northland to find the tanequil. She is armed with the Elfstones and her elemental magic, which she learned from Ahren.
Wencling Elessedil
Thirteen years old and one of Kellen's sons, he is on the Ellenroh along with Kiris and Kellen and is killed when the Federation uses its new weapon against it.
Wren Elessedil
An Elven queen, she returned Arborlon to the Four Lands.
Stow Fraxon
A commander of the Elven army regulars, he was killed during the Federation assault.
Gar Hatch
A Rover and Cinnaminson's father, he was killed by Aphasia Wye and left to hang off the ship, drying and rotting until Pen and his friends took control and took his body off deck.
Coran Leah
Quentin's real father and Bek's adoptive one.
Liria Leah
Quentin's real mother and Bek's adoptive one.
Quentin Leah
Bek's adoptive brother and best friend.
Rue Meridian
Mother of Pen Ohmsford, she and Bek were on a scouting expedition when Traunt approached them. They go to Paranor, where Bek uses the magic of the wishsong to seek out his son. Not wanting to reveal his presence to the Druids, they pretend to not have found him and return later at night to search him out again, but are caught and locked up separately.
Terek Molt
A Dwarf and one of the Druids in Shadea's inner circle, he was killed when Ahren and Khyber used their combined magics on him and the Galaphile.
Trefen Morys
A Druid who gives Bek two notes in secret; the first one tells the Ohmsford to not trust Shadea and the others; the second one, sent after Bek is locked up, assures him that help is coming. It is unknown who this Druid is.
Bek Ohmsford
Father of Pen Ohmsford, he and Rue were on a scouting expedition when Traunt approached them. They go to Paranor, where Bek uses the magic of the wishsong to seek out his son. Not wanting to reveal his presence to the Druids, they pretend to not have found him and return later at night to search him out again. Bek is able to pinpoint his son's location, but as he and Rue are heading back to their chambers, they are caught and locked up separately. Bek makes plans to escape, but a note from an unknown Druid tells him that help is coming.
Grianne Ohmsford
The former Ard Rhys, she is trapped within the Forbidding and in the hands of the Straken Lord, Tael Riverine. She tries to escape, but fails. Tael pits her against a herd of Furies, but she is able to call upon the magic of the wishsong to successfully become one of them, fulfilling his expectations. As she languishes in her cell afterward, feeling lost and bereft of hope, Weka Dart appears and tells her that Tael plans to mate with her.
Penderrin Ohmsford
Son of Bek and Rue Ohmsford and charged by the King of the Silver River to save his aunt, he journeys into the Inkrim with Cinnaminson to search for the tanequil. Once he finds it, he persuades it of its need to give him one of its branches, which it does, but takes from him two of his fingers and Cinnaminson in retribution. He shapes the branch into the darkwand and will now have to go to Paranor and into the Forbidding to save Grianne.
Shea Ohmsford
A half-Elf who destroyed the Warlock Lord with the Sword of Shannara over five hundred years ago.
Etan Orek
An engineer, it was he who invented the new airship weapon.
Tael Riverine
The Straken Lord of Kraal Reach, it holds Grianne captive and plans to mate with her. It was the demon whose face Grianne had seen when she had visited the Northland and also was the demon who sent the Moric into the Four Lands.
Traunt Rowan
One of the Druids in Shadea's inner circle, he, along with Pyson, hunt for Pen Ohmsford in the Northland.
Pied Sanderling
The Captain of the Home Guard and first cousin of Kellen, he finds out about the Federation weapon and tries to warn Kellen about it, but is too late. Now the Federation marches northward and he must lead the Elves into battle against them.
Pyson Wence
A Gnome and one of the Druids in Shadea's inner circle, he, along with Traunt, hunt for Pen Ohmsford in the Northland.
Vaden Wick
A charismatic Dwarf, he commands the Freeborn soldiers.
Achen Wuhl
A Gnome shaman living with the Warst tribe, he went with Kermadec to the Northland fires in an attempt to learn more about them. When he tried to conjure them up, the fires swallowed him in and he disappeared.
Aphasia Wye
An assassin sent by Shadea to kill Pen, he wields the Stiehl. He follows Pen and Cinnaminson into the island where the tanequil dwells but is killed before he can get to Pen: Khyber attacks him with her earth magic, and the roots of Mother Tanequil reach out, take him below ground, and crush him to pieces.
